A one-day bike trip to Stockholm

As many people know, Stockholm is the capital of Sweden. It's a beautiful city that consists of islands, old architecture, and new fashion. If you want to see Stockholm from a different angle, you should definitely try to bike around the city. I did that last week with my Swedish group from school. We left on Wednesday, spent Thursday biking around Stockholm and went back on Friday. Here's what we did and saw.

8.00am
A breakfast in Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel. The breakfast was one of the best ones I have ever had. It included typical Nordic tastes, like salmon and Swedish pancakes, but also offered a lot of options for everybody. It had a huge variety of fruits, types of bread, desserts and warm breakfasts. You could also order omelets or special coffees from the kitchen without paying extra. I can tell you that the cappuccino there was literally the best one I have had.

9.00am
A bike tour to Långholmen. Here's a map of the route so you can recreate it. This route is a good way to see the smaller islands and see the skyline of Stockholm from its highest bridge. It takes some muscles to bike on the top of that but the view is worth it.

10.30am
After biking 7.5km it's time to stop and enjoy the beautiful view of the Royal Palace. From there you can bike through the center of the city and end up the Modern Art Museum. There you can enjoy the best artworks of artists from all around the world. There's also a really cute gift shop where you can buy some Nordic/Swedish designs.

1.00pm
At this point, you are probably hungry so it's time to bike to the area of Östermalm. It's famous for its small shops, tasty restaurants and old, crowded streets. It's the perfect place to have a small lunch. I had lunch at the Östermalm Saluhall which is the home of delicious foods. You can eat in all kinds of different foods in there. I ate some tacos (very Swedish, I know) and they were absolutely delicious. You can also buy some Swedish food from there. Though I have to say that the Saluhall isn't the cheapest place to eat in even though I got my tacos for about 11,5€ (110 kr).

Djurgården

After eating and maybe shopping in Östermalm, it's time to bike to Djurgården. Djurgården's top places to visit are ABBA-museum, Gröna Lund (amusement park) and the art museum of Prince Eugen. We visited the art museum which is often described as the most beautiful art museum in Sweden. The art museum is in the middle of a cute park where is also a beautiful, comfy café. It's perfect for a small ice cream after the lunch. The museum was absolutely beautiful and the house exudes history. But you can also spend your time in the interactive ABBA-museum or by testing a few rides in Gröna Lund.

4.00pm
After spending time in Djurgården, it's time to bike back to the center of the city. There are tons of shops where you can buy Swedish design furniture, clothes, and food. For example, there's a shopping mall known as Gallerian. There's also a lot of second-hand stores in Stockholm so you could check them out.

7.30pm
Then it's time for the final stop - Gamla Stan. You can explore the small streets by bike or by foot. There are also a lot of pleasant restaurants where you can eat after you have explored enough. In Gamla Stan, there are also quite a few small shops which you can visit to buy some souvenirs etc.

That's how you can spend one day in Stockholm and still get to see the top places of the city. Of course, it's better if you have more time. This route that I've told you about is approximately 20 kilometers long.

Remember to check your bike before starting the trip and ensure that you have the basic tools with you so you can fix your tire if needed. Stockholm is an easy city for bikers since there're a lot of bike routes and it's made really easy and safe to move around the city by bike.

I hope you find this post helpful!

  2. Biking is a wonderful (+eco-friendly) way to explore a new city. I haven't learnt to ride a bike yet, sadly, but I should learn. Walking is fun but sometimes not quite convenient. Stockholm looks beautiful in the sun.
